Hayley Scanlan is a Dundee-born contemporary womenswear designer known for her bold, distinctive aestectics.
Taught dressmaking by her grandmother Ella Bonar, Hayley went on to study Textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD). Her graduate collection "New Frontiers" attracted attention from supermodel Erin O’Connor and Vogue.co.uk, which named her “Scotland’s coolest young designer.”
She gained industry experience with Jeremy Scott in Los Angeles and assisted Francesca Burns at i-D in London.
In 2012, Hayley won ‘Scottish Young Designer of the Year’ at the Scottish Fashion Awards, winning again in 2014 — the first designer to do so twice. She launched her independent contemporary womenswear label "H·S" with the ‘Velvet Venom’ collection in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2012 and set up her own Dundee design studio where her brand has organically grown to reach global recognition.
H·S has become a favourite with many pop stars, girl bands and DJ's, and has collaborated with Topshop during London Fashion Week and appeared in many various global fashion publications
including Vogue, Elle and i-D.
Named a ‘Design Champion’ by V&A Dundee, Hayley received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dundee in 2019. In 2020, she appeared on "Next in Fashion" on Netflix, chosen as one of the 18 worldwide designers to appear on season 1 of the show.
Hayley continues to live and work in Dundee, running her fashion brand, sewing school, and working as a Design Educator at V&A Dundee where she facilities fashion, textile and design led workshops for higher education, schools, young people and community groups.
